在河北磁县县城南部、太行山东麓，漳河和滏阳河之间密集分布着大大小小数百座坟丘，经科学考古证实是东魏北齐时期的皇家陵墓区。湾漳壁画墓是墓群中唯一经发掘确认的帝陵级墓葬，是300多座北朝墓葬中璀璨的明星。由于规模巨大，发掘工作从1987年持续到1989年。
